“O Sanctissima” was inspired by “O Sanctissima Mater,” a Catholic hymn from 1792, that seeks the prayers of Mother Mary, the Blessed Mother. I created this painting while my own mother, who was always a blessing to me, was present. My mother—who was terminally ill at the time I was painting this and seeking the prayers of the Blessed Mother for my own mother—guided my work with her requests to “add more gold.”
At its heart, the painting depicts the Blessed Mother, surrounded by symbols of the Holy Spirit, angels, and loved ones. Above her, an angel offers praise, and the figure of my father, who had recently passed, appears as if he is already in heaven, watching over the scene.
This work holds profoundly personal meaning for me…
The Blessed Mother is portrayed in deep reverence, with Jesus Christ emerging from her heart, symbolizing the divine connection between mother and son. The frame of the painting is intricately detailed, engraved with sacred words and adorned with nails, bells, and gold—a celebration of praise and worship. The sound of bells rings throughout, representing the presence of the Lord, as if echoing the sacred music of the church. I used a combination of gold powder, paint, and brass elements to bring the heavenly vision to life, creating an atmosphere of light, holiness, and divine love.
This work holds profoundly personal meaning for me, following my mother through her final months, accompanying her to the hospice, and finally, resting near her at her funeral and burial. “O Sanctissima” is not just a painting—it is a living prayer, filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit, symbols of faith, and the enduring power of love. It is a tribute to the overcoming strength of devotion, courage, and the deep connection between heaven and earth. I hope this painting invites you into the sacred—offering comfort, hope, and the beauty of divine grace.
